Homebound

The definition of “Homebound” has been expanded and providers have been directed to become more flexible – to look at the patient’s condition over a period of time rather than for short periods within the home health stay.

“Mid pleasures and palaces though we may roam, be it ever so humble, there’s no place like home.” — John Howard Payne

Patients are now allowed to attend adult day care, family reunions, graduations and/or funerals. In general, a patient meets the “Homebound” requirements under the following conditions

•Absences from the home are infrequent, are for periods of relatively short duration or are attributed to the need to receive medical treatment including attendance at a psychosocial or medical program accredited, licensed and certified by the state.

•Considerable effort and assistance are required to leave home and care is needed on an intermittent basis.

•The illness or injury restricts the ability to leave home except with the aid of a supportive device such as a walker or cane to walk, special transportation is required, or another person is needed.

•Leaving the home is medically contraindicated.
